Virgil Isaac Hammerly, Jr.
After a short illness, while in the Medical Center of Southeast Texas, Virgil went to heaven on Monday, Nov. 4th, to be with family and friends that passed before him.
Virigl was born on August 24, 1951, in Orange, Texas. He was a resident of Orange, until 1983, when he moved his family to Mauriceville, Texas. Virgil graduated from Little Cypress High School, in 1969. After graduation he went to work for Equitable Pulp and Paper Mill, until 1976, when he went to work for North Star Steel. He retired after 25 years. In 2002, he went to work for Delta Downs Racetrack and Casino, and retired from there, in 2011.
Virgil was a very compassionate man that who helped anyone who needed it, because it was the right thing to do, and only asked for a good meal as payment. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening, and having large pets, like horses, cows, pigs, and goats. Most of all Virgil loved being around his grandchildren and watching them grow; helping mold them into people who are meant to do great things.
Virgil married his wife, Mary Guidry Hammerly, in 1977, and spent 42 wonderful years together.
Virgil is survived by his wife, two sons, Jeremiah and Justin Hammerly, two daughters, Jessica Hammerly and Jennifer Hammerly Rash, and husband Thomas Rash II. Four grandchildren: Isaac Maldonado, age17, Mylie Jo Evans age11, Peyton Kellis Evans, age9, and Liliana Desiree Rash, age2. Brother, Rodney Hammerly and wife, Michell, sister Julia McCray, all of Orange, and sister Terrie Buttry-Heart, of Charlston, SC, and many nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Sr. and Junia Buxton, stepmother Elaine Hammerly, brother, Carl Hammerly, nephews Cody Pierce and Micha Hammerly.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 PM, on Thursday, November 7, 2019, at Dorman Funeral Home; Reverend Damon Bickham officiating. Visitation of family and friends will be held an hour prior to service time, at Dorman Funeral Home.
