Donald Welch Obituary

Donald (Don) T. Welch passed away at age 83 on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, in Jefferson County, TX. He was a resident of Newton County, TX. Funeral services are being conducted by Dorman Funeral Home on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 2:00 pm. Pastor Walter Knighton will be officiating. There will be a military graveside service at King’s Cemetery in Hartburg, TX following the Memorial Service. In lieu of sending flowers, feel free to donate to the Disabled American Vets or to St. Jude in his memory.

Donald was born on May 3, 1937 in Shea, TN to his parents, Thomas L. Welch and Bernice N. Wyles
Welch. When he was 10 years old, his older brother came home in his military uniform, and he
decided then that the military was for him. So, he spent a life of service in the U.S. Navy and also
served as a Recruiter until he retired. He worked as an Electrician, earned a diploma for HVAC
(Industrial) and was certified in Block Laying for masonry work. He enjoyed working on his tractor
and loved farming and planting fruit trees. He especially liked to visit with his friends and loved a
good game of Dominos and never hesitated to lend a helping hand when needed.

He loved telling stories about time spent on his family’s farm and while he was in the Navy. He and
his father went hunting, when he was a young boy, and they met some wild hogs that chased them up
a bolder. They only had one shot gun and one shell left, so they were stuck there for about 4 hours
until the hogs were through eating and wandered off. He also talked about a couple of his brothers
(who shall remain nameless), who attached a small motor to a corn sheller and he was so tickled to
tell how the cobs were just shooting out and banging on stuff when they flew out. He talked a lot about
his family memories and since his family was so large, he had a lot of stories to tell.

He is survived by his daughters: Donna (Ken) Schmutzler of Chesapeake, VA; Susan (Scott) McKay
of Virginia Beach, VA; Linda (John) Nardella of Newton County, TX; and Deirdra (Todd) Buxton of
Orange, TX. Donald has 9 surviving grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Surviving siblings include his sisters: Darlene Mullinax and Norma Turner of Crab Orchard, TN and
Bertha (Tino) Welch of Barnesville, GA. Surviving brothers are: Conrad (Jane) Welch, Ralph (Leda)
Welch, Larry (Pat) Welch and Bill Welch, all of Crossville, TN and Reval (Judy) Welch of Kingston,
TN; and his sister-in-law, Betty Welch. Donald has a great number of surviving nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas L. Welch; his mother, Bernice Wyles Welch; brothers:
Thomas L. Welch, Jr., Henry Martin Welch and Albert Welch; sisters: Vera Mullinax and Dorothy
Love, grand-daughter, Tabetha Williford, sister-in-law, Dora Welch, brothers-in-law:
John Ed Mullinax and Roy Turner and nephews; John L. Mullinax, Ronald T.
Barnes, Sr. and James C. Flowers.
