Harry Brown Obituary

Harry Brown, age 89, of Deweyville, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at his residence in Deweyville, Texas.  Arrangements were made under the care of Dorman Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held on Harry’s upcoming birthday, March 23, 2024. Harry Lew Brown was born in the family home of Harley and Addie Brown on March 23, 1934, in Pomeroy, Ohio. His sister, Phyllis, was 10 years older and Harry loved to prank her when boyfriends would visit. In high school, Harry was a handsome young man and popular with the girls. After high school, Harry served 4 years in the US Air Force, Private A/1C, from 1953-1956. During this period, he studied aircraft mechanics at Sheppard AFB in Texas, was stationed in Greece, and met his future wife, Jo, while stationed in Palm Beach, Florida. They were married on April 22,1955 and raised four children during their 68-year marriage. In 1969, Harry, Jo, and the kids settled in Deweyville, Texas. Harry excelled in his career as a paper maker for Owens-Illinois paper mill in Orange, Texas. Throughout his life, Harry was a motorcycle enthusiast. He enjoyed cross-country motorcycle adventures with his wife and friends. He also enjoyed planting an annual garden and incubating eggs to expand his chicken flock. Along with chickens, Harry raised goats, rabbits, horses, emus, and the occasional nutria rat. Summers were spent boating, fishing, and playing dominoes with family and friends at his cabin on the Sabine River. He was a scout master, served on volunteer ambulance and fire departments, and hosted mock-accident EMT training days on his 14-acre property. He is fondly remembered for fixing whatever was broken with whatever was handy — no matter how it looked. Today, it’s known by family and neighbors as “Harry-Browning-It.”

Harry is preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Addie Brown, his sister Phyllis and brother-in-law Roger Spencer.

He is survived by his wife Jo Brown; niece Debra Spencer; children Jeff and Kellie Brown, Elaine Brown, Paige and Preston Turner, and Joey Brown; grandchildren Leslie and Jonathan Perdue, Tana and Brent Williamson, Shelley and Brandon Landry, and Margie Bergeron; great grandchildren Genevieve and Perry Perdue.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Southeast Texas Hospice. A Celebration of Life will be held on Harry’s upcoming birthday, March 23, 2024. Please text or call 281-703-7121 for details.
