Tommy Roy "Pete" Welch

Mr. Tommy Roy “Pete” Welch , age 87, of Hartburg, Texas, passed away Friday , November 12, 2021 at his residence.

Pete was born February 11, 1934, in Rusk County, Texas, to parents Ottie Mae (Nichols) and Weaver “Slim” Welch and had lived in this area for a number of years.

He was in the first graduating class of Little Cypress in 1953. Pete had a great love for raising chickens. He had a chicken farm in his twenties and sold the eggs to surrounding hospitals. When traveling he never missed an opportunity to tour chicken houses when he came across them. In his younger years he worked at Henke & Pillot and would still refer to Kroger’s as this.

He retired from DuPont after working in the lab and was a member of Hartburg Baptist Church. He loved “working the land” and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Pete had a love for sports, having played basketball and also served as a referee. He dedicated many years to coaching ladies softball and basketball teams in the community as well.

His survivors include his wife, Alice Welch of Hartburg, Texas; sons, Randy Welch and wife Bonnie of Suffield, Ohio, and Kent Welch and wife Brenda of Hemphill, Texas; daughters, Vanessa Simmons and husband Pat of Vidor, Texas, and Wendi Sexton and husband Brian of Newton, Texas; a sister, Joyce Rice of Kingwood, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Valinda Welch; his parents, Weaver ”Slim” and Ottie Mae Welch; and a brother Jack Paul Welch.

Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 15, 2021, at Hartburg Baptist Church with Bro Charles Bonner and Bro John Fortenberry officiating. Interment will follow at Trout Creek Cemetery In Newton County, Texas. 

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Hartburg Baptist Church.
